Acupuncture for an Active Neighborhood

Lake Highlands is full of runners, cyclists, walkers and weekend athletes, many of whom log their miles around White Rock Lake. If your training is being held back by a nagging injury, acupuncture can help you recover and get back out there. Dr. Hawken trained in acupuncture orthopedics and sports medicine at the UC San Diego athletic training center, and she treats:

Care for the Whole Family

Lake Highlands is a neighborhood of families, and Chinese medicine can help at every stage of life:

  • Fertility support for women and men, including alongside IUI and IVF
  • Pregnancy discomforts such as nausea, reflux, fatigue and back pain
  • Menstrual and menopausal health
  • Children’s health concerns such as colds, ear infections and digestive upset, treated with gentle, needle-free techniques
  • Stress, anxiety, insomnia and grief

For small children, Dr. Hawken usually uses Chinese pediatric massage on acupuncture points or a gentle, comfortable electrical current instead of needles, along with small doses of Chinese herbs when appropriate.

Seasonal Tune-Ups

Chinese medicine teaches that the body has to adapt every time the seasons change, and Dallas weather can swing quickly. Many of our Lake Highlands patients come in four times a year, at the change of seasons, to stay balanced and help their bodies handle seasonal allergies, shifting energy levels and the stress of the holidays. As an old Chinese saying puts it, “Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to dig a well.”

What to Expect at Your First Visit

Your first visit lasts about 90 minutes. Dr. Hawken will review your health history, talk with you about your concerns, and use tongue and pulse diagnosis to understand what is out of balance. Then you will rest comfortably on the treatment table with fine, sterile needles in place for 15–30 minutes. Most people find it deeply relaxing, and some fall asleep.

Treatment may also include cupping, gua sha, gentle electrical stimulation, heat therapy or a customized Chinese herbal formula. Follow-up visits last 45 minutes to an hour.
